eBay Traffic Snapshots: Detect a Cassini Demotion 5 Days Early

By the time your sales drop, you're 5 days too late. Cassini's demotion works through a lag chain: your account's visibility signal drops today, impressions fall over the next 72 hours, search rank slides by day 4, and only around day 5-6 do orders visibly disappear. If you're watching only revenue, you'll see the crash after it happens. If you're watching impressions, you'll see it coming.

The lag — why sales are a trailing indicator

The demotion cascade is deterministic. Cassini drops your account's visibility score (say, because item-specifics coverage fell below 80% or freshness on 200 listings hit the 45-day cliff). Impressions on affected listings drop within 24-72 hours. Search rank position slides by day 3-4. Click-through rate stays constant but on a smaller impression base. Orders fall proportionally around day 5-6.

The 5-day gap is your alerting window. Between the visibility drop and the sales drop, you have time to intervene: relist stale listings, fill missing item specifics, address the trigger. If you catch it at day 1, you probably prevent the sales drop entirely. If you catch it at day 6, you're recovering from damage.

Traffic snapshot data eBay provides

eBay's Traffic Report API (accessible via the Analytics API) exposes per-listing daily metrics: impressions, page views, click-through rate, sales conversion rate. Data is available with a 24-48 hour delay and covers the last 90 days.

Most sellers never poll this data because per-listing polling is expensive (one API call per listing per day = quota exhaustion). The correct approach is bulk report generation — request an async report task that returns all listings in one file, then parse locally. Report tasks take 5-30 minutes to complete but cost only a handful of API calls total.

The 3 leading indicators that predict a demotion

Impressions drop vs page-view drop

These are different metrics with different meanings. Impressions = your listing appeared in search results. Page views = someone clicked through. If impressions drop but page views hold (CTR rises), Cassini is showing you less but the buyers who see you still click — probably not a demotion, more likely a category-wide search volume dip. If impressions drop and page views drop proportionally (CTR constant), that's a demotion signal.

Search rank position by category

Where your listing ranks for its most relevant queries. Requires per-query polling but you only need 2-3 representative queries per category. A slide from position 4 → position 12 over 3 days is diagnostic even if impressions haven't dropped yet — the ranking loss precedes the impression loss.

Zero-view listings percentage

Across your active catalog, what percentage got zero impressions today? Baseline is usually 5-15% (natural long-tail distribution). If that jumps to 30-40% over a week, Cassini has broadly demoted your account. The percentage change is more reliable than absolute impressions because it normalizes seasonal variance.

Manual monitoring workflow

Practical cadence: pull traffic reports weekly per account. Track three metrics: total impressions week-over-week, zero-view listing percentage, and impression concentration (are 20% of listings getting 80% of impressions, or is distribution flatter?).

Time cost: 30 minutes per account per week to pull, parse, and review. For 5 accounts that's 2.5 hours/week. Sellers who don't automate this usually skip it after the first month.

Automated alerting

Build vs buy math: building your own alerting means the API integration (2-3 days engineering), the storage layer for time-series (another 2-3 days), the alerting rules (per-account thresholds, deviation detection — 3-5 days), and ongoing maintenance. Total: 2-3 weeks of engineering time + ongoing.

Buy: several tools cover this. Profitio's Traffic Intel dashboard tracks all three leading indicators per account, fires alerts when any move 25%+ from baseline, and provides recovery playbook links contextual to the trigger. Comes with the standard subscription — no add-on cost.

Recovery playbooks per signal

Impression drop but CTR stable: Likely category-wide search volume shift, not account-specific. Watch for another week before intervening.

Impression drop with CTR also dropping: Ranking signal is degrading. Check freshness on affected listings first (relist stale ones), then item specifics, then price competitiveness.

Rank position slide: Category-specific competitor activity or listing quality issue. Check whether new competitors entered the pool with better pricing or aspect coverage — you may need to match.

Zero-view percentage spike: Broad demotion, usually triggered by an account-level metric (late shipment rate, defect rate). Check Seller Hub → Performance Dashboard for the specific metric that changed.

Profitio's Cassini Intel alerts fire 3-5 days before your traffic dies — 14-day free trial covers full setup.
